“she paid for three months of Amazon Prime before noticing it on her credit card statements and cancelling it, as she didn’t want to subscribe and was unaware that she had subscribed.”

Amazon was reported to the Deceptive Design Tip Line over the way a Prime offer is presented at checkout to customers without a Prime subscription. According to the report, the offer appears with what looks like a “select one” control that already has an option chosen, alongside a right-pointing arrow, giving the reporter the impression that they had accidentally accepted Prime and needed to click the arrow to undo it or change the setting; clicking it instead activated the offer, with no clear way to remove it from the cart. The reporter says they backed out of the page in time to avoid subscribing, but believes their mother was caught by the same pattern, paying for three months of Amazon Prime before noticing the charges on her credit card statements and cancelling, having been unaware she had subscribed.
